Counterprogram fear-based tyranny with the hopeful message of liberty

April 19th is a storied date in American history and the fight for freedom. The "shot heard 'round the world" that started the American Revolution was fired in Concord, Massachusetts on April 19, 1775.

In Waco, Texas on April 19, 1993, a raid by federal agents left 76 people dead.

Motivated by the events in Waco, Timothy McVeigh admitted to participating in the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma that left 168 people dead exactly two years later.

In addition to creating the Oklahoma City National Memorial, federal politicians exploited the fears of Americans to promote, and later pass, "anti-terrorism" legislation expanding wiretapping authority.

The events of September 11, 2001 allowed federal politicians play upon American fears further and enact more restrictions upon formerly-enjoyed freedoms.

With social tyrants on the right and economic tyrants on the left continuing to spend so much mental energy to peddle their messages of fear, where can liberty-lovers turn to for messages of hope?

One moral from the movie "V for Vendetta" is that as people shed their fear, the political class loses its power.

In this era of "pre-emptive self-defense," principled libertarians can debate the morality of the more aggressive actions of the movie's lead character, "V".

But one strategy employed by "V" that all libertarians can follow is to spread the ideas -- or "memes" -- of liberty to other people.

"Ideas are bulletproof."

--V, "V for Vendetta"

Many libertarians are already spreading the memes of liberty. And the intellectual ammunition is everywhere.

Web sites such as LewRockwell.com, Hammer of Truth, and Strike The Root analyze the news of the day from libertarian perspectives.

More in-depth analysis is available through online libertarian magazines, such as The Freeman and Liberty.

The advent of streaming internet audio allows one to listen to libertarian radio talk show hosts, such as Gene Burns, online.

And podcasting allows one to download audio programs onto a digital audio player for convenient listening. Here are a few I've come across:

I encourage you to explore the aforementioned content. By building up your resistance to fearmongering, hope will triumph.

Yours in liberty,
