Over the last several months, the Utah Libertarian Party has added hundreds of names to our e-mail list and our Facebook site. As we get closer to next year’s election season, however, it is more important that ever to increase our membership base. For those of you who are not familiar with the membership situation, I will hopefully make it simpler than it seems.
For many years, someone who wanted to officially join the Libertarian Party paid dues at the national level, of $25.00. This entitled them to membership in both the national and state parties. Dues collected by the national party were shared with the local parties. For a few years, in the late 1900's and early 2000's, the party tried to abolish membership dues, and base its income on donations. It didn’t work, and the party went back to a membership dues format a couple of years ago.

Over the last several months, the Utah Libertarian Party has added hundreds of names to our e-mail list and our Facebook site. This is important, as it helps us expand the number of people who know about our party, and are interested in voting for us.

Unfortunately for state parties, the dues paid to the national party are no longer shared. Those dues support the national office, and pay for a newspaper which is now published 6 times a year (formerly monthly). I would hope that many of you are national members, but national membership is really a separate matter from membership in the Libertarian Party of Utah.

The Libertarian Party of Utah is the organization that actually maintains our ballot spot, and finds and assists candidates for public office. We must get roughly 2% of the statewide vote for one of our candidates, in even numbered years, to maintain an automatic place on the ballot. The automatic place on the ballot also allows us to collect $2.00 donations directly from Utah State Income Tax Forms. While this is an important source of funds for us, it does not generate enough money to run the party or to actively support candidates. Therefore, we have a separate dues structure for members of the Utah Libertarian Party. Dues are $20.00 a year, or $5.00 for students. Our newsletters and access to our website are open to everyone who wishes to be kept current; but party membership is important if you want to really be involved. Party membership is necessary to vote on party officers, the party platform, and other party business. We ask that everyone interested in the Libertarian Party consider paying their dues. Information on how to do that can be found on our website at lputah.org. If you are a first time member, we ask that you fill out the membership form and sign the pledge. If you are renewing, we will not insist on you making out a new application. The pledge associated with membership is meant to remind everyone that we do not seek to spread our political philosophy by force. The very nature of Libertarianism is that people are free to choose as they may please.

The U.S. Constitution provides that someone can vote in both a general election and a primary election without paying a “poll tax” or membership dues. Therefore, our membership application has a separate spot for those who would like to vote for candidates for public office, at our conventions held in even numbered years, without paying dues. We have, in the past, referred to these peoples as “pledge signing members”. At the next convention, there will be a proposal to eliminate the confusion, by eliminating the classification of “pledge signing member”. Those signing the pledge and indicating they want to vote on our candidates for public office (whether they will appear on the ballot or not) may still do so. They are not, strictly speaking, members of the party. To us, it is very important that those who support the party become members, as that really is our chief source of money, and it identifies those who are willing to commit to being Libertarians.

A small party like ours has traditionally been unable to do much to support candidates for office. We are working hard, however, to increase our ability to make monetary contributions to candidates, as well as to give them volunteer and organizational support. If you consider yourself a Libertarian, and if you want to help the party grow and be heard, we need you to pay your dues and become an official member. Please consider doing so today, or give one of the party officers a call to get your questions answered, before committing. Thank you so much for your support. Without you, we can do nothing.

When the list of speakers was announced, My name was not there. I immediately had several people come over and ask why not. I had no idea, of course; but I knew that it was very hot, and that most of the people there didn't want to listen to me anyway. So, here I am, back at my office spreading our message in a quieter manner. It is my belief that most of our founding fathers were Libertarians like me. So, we will continue to spread the message as we can. And, perhaps a few right wing Republcians will come away from the rally with a little too much sun. More power to them.

Despite this fact, there was good participation among our members, and some new members as a result. Next year, we will be in the forefront of this movement, where we belong.

The Crossroads of the West Gun Show was held in Salt Lake City over the least two days, and members of our party were out working at our booth, passing out literatre, answering queastions, and signing up new members. Thanks to those who participated in this activity. This week marks our return to the Gun Show after missing the last couple of years. Hopefully, this once again raises our profile in the community.

Upcoming events include a film on the hopeless "war on drugs", a rally to "End the Fed", and a party booth at the Salt Lake Pride festival. In previous years, we have done less when there were no elections. With the leadership of our State Executive Committee, however, the party has been growing well in this non-election year. We have decided that we cannot wait until election years to do the groundwork needed to make the party grow. I am excited to be a part of this effort, and to see the results. Our party Facebook page has grown especially fast, and our e-mail list has also expanded. I have worked to make news of many libertarian activities avalable here on the website as well. And we recently completed a Facebook ad campaign directed at getting more Utah taxpayers to contribute to the party on their income tax forms. We will soon see how successful we were at that. With over 60,000 votes last year for our State Auditor candidate, we know that there are many people who are willing to consider our candidates. As more people become discouraged by the two "major parties", we expoect to see our own numbers continue to rise.

All in all, this ia a great time for us to work hard to and prepare for bigger things in the next election. If you value your freedom, and you want to help with this effort, please let us know. "You have nothing to lose but your chains."

As Libertarian Chair, I was asked by some on my executive committee to join that chorus. This morning's Tribune makes it clear he will not heed such calls; so perhaps they are not of great value. I think it is very telling, however, that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) felt it important to issue a rare statement distancing itself from his rantings. On the other hand, the ACLU issued a statement affirming their support for free speech, even when "vehemently" disagreeing with what he said. As Chair of the State's third largest political party, I want to suggest that the fault is not with this one man. It is with the one party domination of Utah politics, and it ultimately is with those who would elect a man like this to the Utah Senate. As the ACLU often says, the remedy for bad speech is more speech. Those who agree that men like Chrtis Buttars should not sit in the State Senate should be working hard to change Utah politics, and to elect new people with different view points. We invite those who cannot support continued Republican domination of Utah to join with us to work for change. And we invite the press to report what we have to say, and to give the citizens of this State a real choice when they go to their polling place. Together we can effect real change, and make Utah a place we can be proud to live in.

People want to express their support of our party, but not very much. Well, it is a start, and now it is our job to convince them to invest just a little bit more. And the chance for that is right now!

If you want to support the Libertarian Party just a little, please check our party on your 2008 Utah income tax. It is easy and painless, and it does not require a big commitment. It does not decrease your refund or increase your tax. Obviously, the Republicans do not need your money; and you will not feel any satisfaction by checking the Democratic Party. They will still lose, and they will not bring about real change. The value in checking Libertarian is that you know we will use the money to be heard, and to advocate for real change. We are small, but we are growing. And, if 55,000 people each donate $2.00 through their tax check off, that will be an IMMENSE boost to our little group. Think about that for a minute, and then act.

If you feel you can invest just a little more of yourself, please ask your friends to do the same. If each person who reads this can get five friends to check us on their tax forms, it will be a big improvement. Of course, we would like everyone to consider joining the Party and paying dues. But we realize that is more than many wish to do. So, please do just a LITTLE to help us have a HAPPY NEW YEAR, and make yourself feel better too.

Although the final election canvass will likely yield higher numbers and percentages for Libertarian candidates, using the unofficial results for the 2008 general election at the Lieutenant Governor's Office, some numbers ...

Total votes received by Libertarian candidates in the 2008 general election: 125,021 (2004 number: 118,716). And Libertarians competed in 13 races in 2008 compared to 19 races in 2004.

Ballot access number: 17,407 (rounded up from two percent of 870,307 ... the total number of votes cast in the congressional races)

Unlike two years ago, the CPUtah's candidate in the Third Congressional District did NOT qualify the CPUtah for ballot access. But its State Auditor candidate did.

All of the LPUtah's state office candidates qualified the LPUtah for ballot access in the 2010 general election.

The Barr/Root ticket received the third highest percentage (.73%) and third highest vote total (6,461) of LP presidential tickets in Utah. Higher tickets were Clark/Koch in 1980 and Paul/Marrou in 1988.

Drag them in to register today.
Dear Party Leaders,
The attached polling location notice card will be hitting the mail this week in Salt Lake County . One card is mailed to every household that has a registered voter. Another mailing will go out after the October 20th in-office registration deadline to all households that registered after the by-mail deadline. The card indicates the Election Day polling location for the household and also provides the early voting and in-office voting schedule.

Call our campaign office at 801 565-1988 if you want to help, or just get out there and pass out our materials and pass the word. The office now also has a full selection of Libertarian Party brochures. Have you paid your dues? It would really help if you would.

Please also read and help distribute my blog here and at www.andrewmccullough.blogspot.org and see my completely redesigned website at www.andy4ag.com. And see the websites of other candidates, linked from our home page, particularly the site of our presidential candidate, Bob Barr. Our Vice Chair, Dylan McDonnell is working hard in legislative District 24 (www.votedylan.com) and needs your support as well. I think we will easliy defend our ballot poition, but we need to do more than that. We need to be heard, and to help change the nature of the debate. Pay your dues, and then find another way to help. And stay tuned for more.

Recently there has been much discussion of the repeal of Utah's anachronistic Private Club law which requires a membership for those who wish to go to many bars. The governor supports the change as something that will help tourism; and it has seemed likely that change was in the wind. Now it appears that John Valentine, the Senate President, opposes this change; and his opposition may be enough to derail it. Well, there is also an effort underway to change the law through a petition and ballot initiative. Either way, the change should be made. Since public opinion polls show widespread support, the legislature should save all of us a lot of money, and do their job.

Now it appears that John Valentine, the Senate President, opposes this change; and his opposition may be enough to derail it. Since public opinion polls show widespread support, the legislature should save all of us a lot of money, and do their job.

At the same time, the DABC wants more money to police alcohol establishments. A recent article in Salt Lake City Weekly exposed just the tip of the iceberg concerning the efforts of the Commission to harrass bar owners and patrons in ways that are unfair, devious and unnecessary. The Libertarain Party supports all of your freedoms, and opposes enforcement which appears designed to entrap, rather than to discover legitimate violations.

Join us in our quest to bring freedom to Utah. Let your legislators know where you stand on this issue; and then cast your vote for the Libertarian candidates you can trust to support freedom.
