LPUtah Issues Second "Fair Representation Challenge" to Utah's Colleges and Universities

SALT LAKE CITY – For the second straight year the Libertarian Party of Utah's chairman, Rob Latham, has made the "Fair Representation Challenge" to student leaders at Utah’s colleges and universities.

The challenge will measure which student body government does the most to promote the use of more representative electoral systems in student body elections, such as those used at Stanford University and Lewis & Clark College (PDF file).

Although this year's prize went unclaimed by any of Utah’s colleges and universities, Latham has again pledged at least $1000 to be donated to the general scholarship fund of the winning school.

All of Utah’s colleges and universities accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities are eligible.

By April 20, 2007, the Libertarian Party of Utah must receive proof of a college or university's efforts to make its student body elections more competitive and representative.

Such proof might consist of legislation introduced by a student legislator, audio of a student debate about alternative electoral systems, articles in the college or university newspaper about efforts to implement alternative electoral systems, or an oral presentation by student leaders about efforts to improve student body elections at a Libertarian Party of Utah meeting.

The Executive Committee of the Libertarian Party of Utah will determine the winners of the Fair Representation Challenge.

On May 1, 2007, the Libertarian Party of Utah will announce which college or university, in its judgment, did the most to make its student body elections more competitive and representative.
